halloween 2012

yippee…it’s halloween season again! our favorite time of year.

had fun making a halloween birthday cake again this year for our dear friend- a decomposing head cake!

a few weeks ago i purchased the wilton 3-D skull cake mold from amazon.com.  i saw this online and got excited with ideas of making gory skull cakes for the kids.  of course, it just sat on my kitchen counter while i suddenly felt uninspired to bake anything.

then i finally came up with the idea to decorate a skull cake into a decomposing head for the birthday cake.  this was by far my most favorite of cakes.  it was fun to make.

i used red velvet cake mix, covered the face and rat in fondant.  then used gum paste for the flies and worms, both painted with luster dust.  for blood, i used red decorating icing.  yum!
